Vintage Mama Sculpture from Nigeria
This sculptural Mama mask is crafted by the Mama people of Eastern Nigeria. It is hand-carved from wood in an abstract design that is inspired by the bush cow. These masks are worn with thick fiber costumes during ceremonial dances to provide a protective bush spirit and power of the animal itself to the dancer.
These vintage Mama masks are hard to find and make beautiful sculptural decorative pieces anywhere in the home. The mask has developed a great patina from years of use and the red pigment comes from the use of camwood which the mask is coated with. Please expect cracking and chipping of wood due to age and use. Custom metal stand that inserts into holes on back of mask, included with purchase.
